Are Boxing Shoes Good for Running? Here’s Why Not

Running

Boxing shoes are a must-have item—if you want to compete or become the best boxers possible. By complimenting your abilities with equipment that’ll help you in various aspects in your fighting journey, your skills will instantly improve. But, can you also work out or run with such shoes?

Boxing shoes aren’t suitable for running for two primary reasons: they don’t come with impact-resistant padding, and they’re lightweight, hence made out of rather weak materials. Running footwear, on the other hand, is supposed to ensure your foot receives as little impact as possible.

For that reason, running shoes are from stronger, more prominent materials. Likewise, they come with extra padding, to ensure the impact your leg receives from each step—is as little as possible.

Another reason is that boxing shoes aren’t made for the outdoors. As a result, even if you were to walk with them constantly and for a rather long time, they’ll wear off quickly compared to other shoes brands. Therefore, it’ll be best to wear them only when you’re inside the ring, preparing to fight.

Another feature of boxing footwear—is their grip. Boxers can’t allow themselves to slip at all. If they do, the opponent gets the advantage, immediately. As a result, such footwear help you be more stable and thus, have more grip – which is different from typical sports shoes.

Can you walk around in boxing shoes?

Shoes are meant, so you’ll be able to walk around in them. That said, some of them—aren’t as suitable to such action because of a few reasons. In our case, let’s examine whether boxing footwear will be suitable for walking around. And if so, we’ll see whether you should use them for such a purpose or not.

Boxing shoes aren’t suitable for walking around because they wear off quickly in the outdoors, hence anywhere outside your boxing gym. Likewise, they’re lightweight and don’t have any padding. As a result, your feet may be extremely uncomfortable after one or two miles.

The same thing can be said on wrestling shoes. Nonetheless, if you really need to, you can, of course, walk around in them. But, don’t expect it to be as comfortable as typical running shoes, which come with extra padding and are stronger.

Boxing shoes are a fantastic choice inside the ring; you won’t find it difficult to wear them, even if you think they’ll be uncomfortable. That’s because they’re designed for such an atmosphere. But, what they’re not designed for—is to have you constantly walk around in them.

Are boxing shoes good for workout?

Thus far, we’ve discussed the importance of boxing shoes and why you shouldn’t walk around, or run, with them. We have also understood why they help us in the ring. Now, let’s see whether we can work out with them; spoiler: the answer will surprise you.

Working out with boxing shoes is suitable because there’s nothing limiting its effectiveness in such a situation. For example, they fit the indoor, such as the gym. Likewise, they’re lightweight and suitable for static exercises, such as lifting weights. As a result, they’re effective for such a purpose.

There is one exception, tho, and that’s calisthenics. More often than not, street workout is going to be outdoors. If you work out in such a spot with boxing shoes, you must ensure you don’t start walking around in the mud or sand. If you do, you’ll boost the wearing out process of your footwear, which is too bad.

But, as a general rule, boxing shoes are more than suitable for working out. Lifting weights in the gym, for instance, is a fantastic and suitable use for this type of footwear.

Nonetheless, if you can avoid using them for any purpose other than boxing, you’ll ensure they stick with you for longer, which is what most people seek.

Can boxing shoes be used for weight lifting?

If you own a high-quality pair of boxing shoes, you may start wanting to use them for other purposes. But, you might find yourself fighting over whether it’s best practice to do so. Let’s examine one of these scenarios.

You can use boxing shoes for weightlifting, primarily if the workout is indoors. If you’re doing a street workout outdoors, you may shorten the time you have with these shoes, as they wear off quickly in the outdoors. But, it’s best practice only to use them when you’re inside the ring, or in your martial arts gym.

To be precise, other than street workout, you can use boxing shoes in weight lifting scenarios; again, if it’s indoors. You’ll be much better off not using them and instead getting a dedicated pair for the gym.

But, it’s possible to use these shoes if you’re unwilling to invest money into buying an extra pair of footwear. In that case, you can use them without expecting them to wear out quickly.

The differences between boxing and running shoes

The primary thing you need to remember is that you can use running shoes wherever you want. If you want, you can jump into a pool of mud and water and still continue using them.

On the other hand, if you decide to simply walk with your boxing shoes outdoors, you’ll find they wear out much quicker. As a result, it’ll be best to stick to using them only in the ring, or in your gym.

Because they have two distinct purposes, I encourage you to own at least a single pair of running shoes and a single boxing one. As a result, you’ll be able to keep them both for their purposes; thus, you won’t use Adidas footwear in the boxing ring but for the sake of their existence, running or walking.

Final words

Boxing is one of the best martial arts. Its dedicated shoes are extremely different from a typical pair of running shoes. As a result, using them for the same purpose—is never a wise choice. Because of that, it’ll be best to own a single pair of running shoes and another of boxing-dedicated footwear.

If you begin using your boxing shoes outdoors, they’ll wear out much quicker than if you were to use them exclusively for the sake of their existence – inside the ring or gym.

Likewise, you can’t use boxing shoes for running, as they don’t have any impact-resistant padding system. As a result, your legs will receive large amounts of impact, which is unhealthy in the long-term; so avoid using them for running or even walking in the outdoors.
