The purpose of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is to teach people to fight appropriately and effectively. Its exclusive focus is on ground grappling techniques, which are maneuvering your opponent while both of you are on the ground. Ground grappling is incredibly effective and suitable for fighting purposes.

While BJJ is a type of martial art intended to help you become a better fighter, many people also engage in BJJ classes to work out, stay fit, and relieve stress. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art that utilizes ground grappling to beat the opponent swiftly. Essentially, ground grappling is maneuvering your opponent while on the ground to cause a submission. Moreover, it became popular because many people are interested in the sport of Jiu-Jitsu.

Is BJJ suitable for self-defense?

BJJ is suitable for self-defense because it’s the art of ground grappling, which is effective for fighting. Moreover, regardless of your size, you can use such movements to quickly disable an attacker and thus finish the fight without any injuries.

#1- BJJ transforms you into a solid fighter

As expected, the primary objective of BJJ is to help you become a great fighter. BJJ helps you become better suited to handle whatever dangerous situation you find yourself in. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches you how to tackle and take down your opponent easily to the ground during a street fight or a self-defense situation.  

One of the most important lessons for learners is mastering positional awareness. Essentially, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu enables you to know how to position yourself well to “minimize your opponents’ ability” while maximizing your own. BJJ advocates for getting into a more dominant position than your opponent to gain an advantage during an altercation.  

While many other martial arts insist on using force, BJJ emphasizes more grappling skills and closing the distance between you and your aggressor to defeat them. BJJ is highly effective, especially when dealing with significantly much bigger opposition.

You do not have to be super athletic or incredibly strong to stand a fair chance with a bigger attacker. You only have to rely on a series of well-choreographed movements and tactics you are taught in the training sessions.

For instance, if you find yourself in a fight, you can apply clinching moves using your feet. You can block whatever punches, kicks, and throws they hurl at you using moves such as sprawling. If you want the fight to end in a matter of seconds, you can put your opponent in a submission hold or choke them and force them to submit and tap out. 

It can help you win a one versus one duel easily and even boost your odds if you, unfortunately, find yourself face to face with multiple attackers.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training offers a comprehensive workout targeting various muscles, body parts, and limbs. In addition, BJJ for one to master BJJ, they need to go through a series of sparring sessions with partners. The movements need you to consistently engage your whole body. The warmups to start your sessions and the rolling on open mats during the sessions will enable you to burn many calories that help you manage your weight more efficiently.
